It was 1945. Allied bombers were pounding Berlin to rubble. In desperation, the Nazis started moving the assets of the Berlin Reichsbank south for safekeeping. Vast trainloads of gold and currency were evacuated from the doomed capital of Hitler's Thousand year Reich. In the aftermath of total war, a huge amount of Nazi gold simply vanished-removed by the Red Army or stolen by an unholy combination of US occupation personnel and unscrupulous ex-Nazis.
